WORK PLACEMENTS

Work experience can give a student valuable insight into a profession and the world of work. But simply spending time in a workplace does not guarantee a valuable experience.

Prologue Work Placements are purposeful, curated and centred on the individual student. Available only to students we have already worked with through Mentoring or a Prologue Academy, each placement is shaped around the student we know - their direction, what they want to learn and the capabilities they want to develop.

01: PURPOSE

Because Prologue already knows the student, each placement starts with a clear purpose — what they want to explore, what they hope to learn and the capabilities they want to develop. The placement can therefore be shaped around the individual student rather than simply finding somewhere for them to spend time.

The most valuable placement is not necessarily with the most prestigious employer. It is one that provides the right exposure, challenge and opportunity to learn, helping the student test their direction, deepen their understanding of a professional field and gain experience that is genuinely relevant to what comes next.

02: PREPARATION

Prologue helps identify and arrange an appropriate placement, drawing on the purpose established with the student. Once the opportunity is agreed, Prologue works with the student to ensure they understand the organisation, the professional environment they are entering and what they want to gain from the experience.

Prologue also liaises directly with the employer before the placement begins, ensuring both sides understand its purpose and expectations. The student arrives informed, prepared and ready to engage — able to ask better questions, recognise opportunities to learn and make more of the time available to them.

03: PLACEMENT

Prologue’s involvement does not end when the student walks through the employer’s door. The placement is actively managed, with regular touchpoints that give the student an opportunity to discuss what they are experiencing, what they are learning and any questions or challenges that emerge.

This encourages the student to look beyond simply completing tasks or observing others. They are encouraged to understand the work, the profession and the professional environment, reflect on their own response to it and make the most of opportunities to contribute, learn and develop throughout the placement.

04: FEEDBACK & 05: REFLECTION

At the end of the placement, Prologue obtains candid feedback from the employer on the student’s performance — including where they demonstrated capability, the impression they made and where they need to develop. That provides insight students rarely receive from conventional work experience.

Prologue then debriefs with the student, bringing together the employer’s perspective and their own experience. They reflect on what they learned, how they performed and what the experience has told them about their direction, translating the placement into greater insight, meaningful development and clearer, purposeful next steps.

Make the experience count

NEXT STEPS

A work placement should do more than provide something to put on an application or CV. Done well, it can help a student test their direction, understand a professional field, develop their capabilities and make better-informed decisions about what comes next.
